The idea of eating food that is in season will be specific to where you live in the world. It's based on eating locally grown produce that has been harvested when it's at its best. This "peak season" produce is not only the time when the fruit and vegetables are freshest, but they also will be the tastiest and have the best nutritional profile.

Exercising outdoors is one of the great joys of spring. The weather is becoming warmer, the mornings and evenings are getting lighter. There seems to be more opportunity to make the best of it. Even though you may be eating a healthy diet and staying active, you may feel it's more difficult than it used to be to lose weight during menopause. You might even find yourself gaining weight and wonder what's happened! There are several reasons to change up your fitness routine. Perhaps you've been doing it a while, and it's not as exciting or challenging as it once was. Or maybe your progress has stalled, and you've hit a plateau where you don't feel like you're getting leaner, stronger or making as much progress. Being on a diet to lose body fat usually consists of some calorie deficit. By definition, this means you’re giving your body fewer calories than it needs to sustain it’s current weight so that your body uses stored body fat as a fuel source. Metabolism refers to all the chemical reactions that happen in your body that keep you alive and functioning. When you see the word metabolism used in this context, it means the rate at which your body burns calories. With Christmas just around the corner, we’re surrounded by an abundance of highly palatable, and highly calorific snacks and treats which have the potential to throw a spanner in the works of our weight loss goals. But is it possible to get through the festive period without re-gaining the weight that we’ve worked so hard to lose this year? Once the nights start to draw in, it can feel desirable to cuddle up in your pyjamas and watch the TV all night, can’t it? Especially if your working commitments mean you can only exercise pre-sunrise or post-sunset. If the thought of exercising in the dark puts you off, there are a few things that can help to keep you motivated. If you suffer from feeling anxious or are having a stressful patch in your life that lasts more than a couple of days, you may have experienced some secondary symptoms of stress. This varies from person to person, but could include disrupted sleep, feelings of tightness in your chest, or a shorter than average fuse! Compared with men, women’s hormones fluctuate quite a bit from day to day. Although science hasn’t yet got a complete picture of how the menstrual cycle affects exercise, we do know that the hormonal fluctuations affect your physical performance and even how your body handles what you eat. |
