Many people believe that if they switch to a vegetarian diet, that they will see the pounds drop off them in no time. However, for many people, this is not going to be the case, and they cannot work out why they are in fact, going the opposite way. Gaining weight is quite common for people who go vegetarian, and this is because while it is true that cutting fatty foods such as burgers out of your diet can help you lose weight, there are some very common mistakes that people make when they switch their nutrition habits. Let’s look at three of these mistakes and why they could be causing you to gain weight. 1. Assume Vegetarian Meals Are Low CalorieWhile people may think that because a meal is vegetarian, it uses ingredients that are good for you, this might not always be the case. In fact, a lot of these meals are full of things like nuts which can be extremely high in calories. As you are loading yourself up on these foods, you are going to notice that you are putting on the pounds and not shedding them and this will be because you are in a calorie surplus. So, what you should do is make sure that you are checking any pre-packaged meals for the nutritional information before you buy them. This way, you will know exactly what you are eating, and this should help you control your calorie intake. If you think about it, a vegetable may be low in calories, but the second that is it fried or cooked in oil, the calories in it skyrocket. If your goal is to lose weight, you'd like to keep those calories to the minimum and fill your diet with nutritious ingredients. 2. Not Enough ProteinAs you make the switch from eating meat to a vegetarian diet, you might forget to eat all the protein that your body requires. This is a recipe for disaster as well as potential weight gain. Your body needs protein, but as well as this, it gives you what you need to feel full and satisfied without having to eat everything in sight. Without the right amounts of protein, you are going to feel hungry every few hours, and this is going to cause you to eat a lot more than your body needs. The simple way to stop this from happening is to include protein in all of your meals. Don’t forget that meat is not the only source of protein, there are many sources that a vegetarian can use in their meals. Eggs, tofu, and lentils are all great sources, and these are pretty easy to fit into your meals. 3. No VarietyIf you are living off processed and unhealthy food, as long as there is no meat in it, you are technically living a vegetarian life. However, these are also extremely high in calories, and your body is going to be getting far more than it needs, meaning that you will be overeating.
You are going to see the pounds pack on rather quickly if you live off of cake and soda. You are limiting yourself to certain foods and missing out on all the amazing health benefits that can come with being a vegetarian. If you are searious about going vegetarian, ensure you do your homework, research how to keep your meals varied. Aiming for a good mix of colours, including green, yellow, red or orange not only will be a sure way of preventing boredom, but this way you can also make sure you eat foods that your body needs. This is what you will have done when you ate meat, and now should be no different. I think to add to this is that, in my opinion, people who switch to a vegetarian diet tend to increase their intake of more pasta & rice dishes, which are "needless" calories that can attribute to packing on the pounds.
